When I first met Michelle, I was struck by her professionalism & work ethic... and her laugh; it's spontaneous & contagious. We later worked out side by side at an event & I left knowing she would become a friend of the studio. Luckily, she has become so much more. Her classes are tough & planned, a year and a half into teaching & I still see handwritten scribbles for ab sets spilling out of her bag. Teacher training was an exercise draped in perfectionism & nerves with a heavy dose of laughter & lightheartedness; she showed up to co-teach a Cinco De Mayo class wearing a sombrero. Among many things, I admire her ability to not take herself too seriously, but still deliver the most serious of results.
PS Today is her birthday!
You can find Michelle at the barre as often as her busy mom life alllows. She typically teaches once a week in the evenings. Read on & enjoy... Melissa
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Rochester, NY. I am an only child and I am beyond close with my parents. I completed my higher education at St. Bonaventure University, graduating with a Bachelors and Masters in Business Administration, with a concentration in Accounting. Not only did I leave Bonas with a great education and friends that will last a lifetime, I also met the love of my life, Nick! After applying for jobs to be in the same city after graduation, we ended up in Buffalo - a compromise since Nick is originally from Connecticut and his older brother already lived here, and I wanted to remain close to my parents. We've lived in Buffalo for over four years, been married for almost a year, together for almost 8 and expecting the newest addition to our family in March of 2018!
What originally brought you to the studio & what made you want to teach?
I first discovered The Barre Studio, Hamburg after being referred by a friend to check it out for my fitness blog, LocallyFit. I took a class and really got caught up in the vibe that the studio emanated. In writing my review on the Studio, I learned a lot about Melissa's background and found that we both had experience in the business world - but also shared a passion for fitness outside of our jobs. She later approached me asking if I knew of anyone who might be interested in teaching - and I thought to myself, this is the perfect opportunity to dive even deeper into my passion for fitness! Over a year later, I am still so excited to come to the studio and pursue this passion.
Most rewarding part of the job?
The most rewarding part of the job has been being able to meet so many great clients and building this solid bond with all of the other instructors as a whole. I love getting to hear all about what the clients are up to in their personal lives and I know they love hearing all about me too! Including the tacos and ice cream I indulged in on a Friday night and they in turn will pay for on a Saturday ;)
What do you do in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy spending time hanging with my husband (we love walking around Canalside and trying new restaurants in the area). I also make frequent trips to visit my family and I am continually planning little weekend getaways to meet up with my girlfriends! I also enjoy working out and checking out new studios around town, many of which I have highlighted on my blog https://locallyfit.wordpress.com/. The fitness community in Buffalo is HUGE and constantly evolving. It has been a great way for me to meet new people and explore more of Buffalo!
